Poke it with a garden cane

The t-shirt/shirt combo is my go-to as the world beings to broil. Fucking stupid sun. Sharding through windows obscuring my laptop screen. Rendering 80% of my wardrobe unwearable. Making late afternoon drinks parties an ordeal of steaming perspiration, warm beer and fidgety, undercooked conversation. The t-shirt/shirt combo is my only respite. On nodding terms with formality (that’d be the shirt collar) yet relaxed, and if loosely buttoned, suitably airy.

I bought a couple of patchwork Comme des Garçons Homme shirts recently. Worn large and sloppy, over a simple white tee, they’re bringing the stylistic edge, while I remain relatively temperate. You might wonder why I don’t just abandon the shirt, stop whining like a babyman and just wear a t-shirt on its own? Simple answer: it’s just not my bag. I don’t feel dressed without some kind of layering garment. If I went tee-only I’d feel nude. I might as well just flop my wang out on Peckham High Street and encourage passersby to poke it with a garden cane.

This Junya Watanabe piece might work as part of the summer over-shirt approach. It does look a little woolly, but it’s apparently all cotton. The hues on the back are slightly out of whack for brighter days too; all a sludgy and muted. That all said, I’d give it a go. With that zipped front and pockets, it’s a perfect shirt/jacket hybrid. At least until the sun fucks off and normal drizzly service can be resumed.
