Phingerin: Yeah, you read that right

Just when I start to think I’m a proper grown up I see a brand called Phingerin and realise I’m not.

Smirking at the pronunciation of a Japanese brand name is not a good look (I put it down to my shoddy 1980s comprehensive school education.) But still, if I was launching a global menswear label, I think I’d double check the dictionary, just to make sure my brand didn’t sound, in any way, masturbatory.

Sophomoric gurning aside, Phingerin offer some bold and distinctive streetwear. According to Bristol’s increasingly impressive retailer Blues, they were the first UK stockist. Unfortunately the piece I’m spotlighting today, this crazy cardigan-cum-denim jacket, has sold out over there. So I’ll reluctantly point you over to Goodhood. I wish I didn’t have to: Goodhood are charging £354, while Blues were asking just £300. That’s London retail for you.

What I like most about this knit is that I’m not sure if I like it. I mean, I kind of like it, as a thing, as an object. But would I wear it? It looks like a cartoon drawing of a jacket. Like something Spongebob would wear on a date. That chunky stitching literally outlines the thing; wearing it you’ll actually look 2D.

But maybe that’s the vibe, maybe I’m just not there yet. It’s called the PG1 Knit Cardigan, take a look over that the brand site and you’ll see they do it in other colours (were it not for the fact that they’re all sold out too.) I’d go with the blue myself. With all that bright yellow topstitching, I’d look like an IKEA bag. Irony yeah! Retail park chic! Yeah baby, I’ve got my finger on the pulse.
